Donald J. Trump President Of The United States Essay
Donald J. Trump will be the next president of the United States. Continuously throughout the election process, pundits and commoners alike dismissed even the slightest possibility of a Trump victory for a host of reasons. The most glaring of which was that he had no political experience, followed closely by the fact that he consistently spewed hateful rhetoric directed at nearly every demographic imaginable, save for white men. Nevertheless, as the election drew closer, the number of his supporters grew and became increasingly loyal. Indeed, his faction was so loyal that he even boasted, I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn t lose voters (Diamond). It seemed as if no matter how many sexist, racist, xenophobic, etcetera, remarks he made, that his supporters weren t merely indifferent; they were rejoicing at his honesty. Furthermore, many of Trump s Draconian policies, although hard to pin down, given that he was always wavering, were often at the e xpense of women, Muslims, and other minorities (Timm). Meanwhile, those opposed to Trump, regardless of who they endorsed, were astounded as to how, in such a diverse country, a man who disrespected so many people could garner so much support. From another perspective, many were bewildered that there were so many Americans who somehow still believed that not every human deserves equal rights. Non Reductive Physicalism ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËAnd thatââ¬â¢, he argued, ââ¬Ëmeans that somewhere in them is intelligence. It canââ¬â¢t be seated in a brain because dissection shows nothing like a brain ââ¬âbut that doesnââ¬â¢t prove there isnââ¬â¢t something that does a brainââ¬â¢s jobâ⬠(Wyndham, 1951/2008, p. 47) Suppose it is a nice sunny day, and you decide to linger in the sun; after a few minutes you may feel thirsty and you look for some refreshment. It can be said that this situation triggers two ââ¬Ësituationsââ¬â¢; on the one hand there is a physical process: the bodyââ¬â¢s reaction to heat, and on the other hand, there is a ââ¬Ëmental effectââ¬â¢: the experience of heat like being thirsty. The relationship between the two situations has been the source of many debates withinâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦My own sympathies, supported by arguments like the completeness of physics (Papineau, 2001) ââ¬âamong others- and empirical research is with the physicalist approach. However, one of the problems with physicalism is its reductivism. For example, there is the claim that consciousness is no more than a brain process (Smart, 1959); however, the problem of these reductive approaches is to find the physical process or the physical laws that can explain the mental in th ose terms. There are strong arguments against such reduction: (Putnam, 1967, Davidson, 1970, Fodor, 1974) with the ideas of multiple realizability, special sciences and anomalous monism are all critical of reductive views, consequently a form of physicalism in non-reductive terms is not just plausible, but a promissory alternative of understanding the mental in physical terms; for instance, Baker (2008) suggests that ââ¬Å"nonreductive materialism holds that the mental is ontologically part of the material world; yet, mental properties are causally efficacious without being reducible to physical propertiesâ⬠(Baker, 2009, p. 109). It is argued in this thesis that physicalist ontology can be secure without the constraints and problems of reductionism, through this non-reductive physicalism (NRP for short). Moreover, if identity theory can be reconciled with a view such as functionalism then non-reductive physicalism can be argue it is a robust

A Jazzy Look At Gatsby - 1669 Words
A Jazzy Look at Gatsby Dance has shaped the way we look at many different things throughout history. It has shaped how people socialize, what music people listen to, and even whole eras. One such era is the roaring 1920s. How did people socialize in the 1920s? They danced the evening away. What music did people listen to? Jazz music that they could listen to while they danced the evening away. Dance was a huge part of what made up the glorious Jazz Age. So, when a book was written to describe the 1920s scene, no doubt there had to be dance, and lots of it. In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses the energy level of the parties, music, and dancing to represent a vast array of emotions within the characters. The 1920s was when dance truly flourished in America. In the earlier years of the 1900s dances like the Waltz and Foxtrot were considered scandalous, because it involved contact between the male and female partners. However, once these dances became more clearly demonstrated in America they soon became social norms. These older and more classical styles were still used in the twenties, but the younger generation of dancers began to add new twists and began pioneering new styles of dance. Now that dresses from the Victorian era were out of style and young women were not confined to their corsets, the dance moves became gaudier and the dresses shorter. Soon everyone was dancing, it had become the newest and best form of entertainment for everyone (Scott,Show MoreRelatedThe 1920s - Research2133 Words à |à 9 PagesThe Roaring Twenties, the Jazz Age, the Golden Age; what happened in this decade that made it so roaring, jazzy, and golden? Robert Frost and E.E. Cumings Essay - 1533 Words
Robert Frost and E.E. Cummings Poetry is considered to be a representational text in which one explores ideas by using symbols. Poetry can be interpreted many different ways and is even harder to interpret when the original author has come and gone. Poetry is an incredible form of literature because the way it has the ability to use the reader as part of its own power. In other words, poetry uses the feelings and past experiences of the reader to interpret things differently from one to another, sometimes not even by choice of the author. Two famous poets come to mind to anybody who has ever been in an English class, Robert Frost and E.E. Cummings. Both of these poets have had numerous famous pieces due to the fact that they bothâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Aside from the connections and similarities both of these poems are actually quite different. In Cummingsââ¬â¢ poem the time cycle such as, ââ¬Å"spring summer autumn winterâ⬠(3). Has the effect that time goes by quickly and the little things almost are insignificant. Also in Cummingsââ¬â¢ poem he had mentioned how children grew to forget, allowing for such interpretations like, once one grows up they loose who they once were. Where in Frostââ¬â¢s poem time slows down to make a choice that will alter oneââ¬â¢s life. When he is deciding between the roads he has time to ponder and question his move having each movement being significant rather than insignificant. Also in Frostââ¬â¢s poem it is safe to assume that when making a choice one will use the knowledge and experiences they had as a child to make choices in the future allowing the reader to understand that one doesnââ¬â¢t simply loose who they once were, but one changes who they become through the choices they make. Frostââ¬â¢s poem has a great sense of irony towards the end, ââ¬Å"I shall be telling this with a sigh / somewhere ages and ages henceâ⬠(16-17). The irony is that while heââ¬â¢s making his choice he is already anticipating how he wi ll tell the story in the future, almost adding a sense of drama
